Battery or Alternator? Let's Find Out

These two get blamed for each other constantly. A dying battery makes the alternator work overtime. A weak alternator slowly starves a healthy battery. Replace the wrong one and you've spent money to keep the exact same problem.

Some hints: if the car starts fine after driving but struggles after sitting overnight, suspect the battery. If the dash lights dim at idle, the headlights brighten when you rev, or a battery warning light glows while driving, the charging system moves up the suspect list. But hints aren't proof. We put a tester on both and let the numbers decide.

Batteries also drop warnings before they quit. Slower cranking than usual on a cool morning. Dash lights that flicker during the start. A car that needs two tries after a weekend of sitting. If any of that sounds like your driveway lately, the battery is asking for a test. Give it one before it picks the timing for you (they always pick the worst morning, it's practically a law).

The Three Summer Rule

Ask anyone who's wrenched in Colorado for a while and you'll hear a version of this: a Denver battery is good for about three summers. Heat is what actually kills batteries (the cold just exposes the damage), and our high altitude sun plus baking parking lots age them ahead of the calendar. That five year warranty sticker? Written for somebody at sea level.

If your battery is heading into its fourth Colorado summer, or you've needed one jump start already, a test is cheap insurance. We come to you, test it under load, and tell you what it has left.

Replacement Without the Errand

If the battery is done, we bring the right size to your address, swap it, clean the terminals, and check that the charging system is treating the new one properly. Newer cars often need the replacement registered with the car's computer so the charging strategy adjusts, and yes, we handle that part too (a step the parking lot swap usually skips). Your old battery leaves with us for recycling.

Beyond the Battery: Charging System Work

Sometimes the battery is the victim, not the culprit. Alternators wear out, serpentine belts glaze and slip, and corroded terminals or ground straps can strangle a charging system that's otherwise healthy. All of it is testable at your curb, and most of it is fixable there too.

Corrosion deserves a special mention in Denver. The mag chloride that keeps winter roads drivable is rough on electrical connections, and a green, crusty terminal can produce symptoms that look exactly like a dying battery. Cleaning and protecting the connections is sometimes the whole fix, which is about the cheapest good news a car can get.
